The Wardrobe Armoury

You may have spent many years collecting the ultimate clothing collection that you adore. Until one day you have noticed a small hole in your favourite cashmere coat or your favourite beaded gown has faded. I have devised a list of  "wardrobe enemies" and given you my top advise on just how to prevent them and in the worst case scenario, cure them.
Picture

THE ENEMY
  • Moths (can munch their way through several thousand pounds’ worth of cashmere in a summer)
  • Woolly bears (wiggly tracks down your woollen coat)
  • Silverfish
  • Carpet beetle
  • Dust
  • Sunlight
  • Damp
  • Plastic
  • Wool pills

PREVENTION
  • Use cedar wood and southern wood (moths hate it)
  • If you have ventilation holes in your wardrobe, cover them on the inside with mesh – old-fashioned wardrobes had louvred slats
  • Use lavender, herbs and spices (ask at a health shop, where they may recommend such things as vetifer, cinnamon sticks, cloves and nutmet, mugwort, rosemary, thyme and camomile flowers)
  • For pills, buy a de-bobbler or a de-fuzzer

CURE
  • Look out for the new generation of organic insect repellents.
  • There’s also a sexy moth trap, which dispenses pheremones called tineola bisselliella, and kills off randy moths. Shop yours at www.totalwardrobecare.co.uk.

MAINTENANCE
  • Twice a year, at the turn of the season, air your wardrobe and sprinkle it with essential oils such as garderobe (literally ‘clothes protector’ in French) or southern wood.
  • Avoid damp at all costs (which makes clothes smell) by flat drying woollens (you can buy a net framework to stretch across the bath) or hanging them up on hangers if they’re light.

Top Ironing Tips

10/6/2014

Ironing clothes can be a counterproductive task if it isn't done properly. Follow my handy tips for ironing:
Picture
  • Use a light iron, they’re easier to manoeuvre – and pay for a good one (Vaporella or Norris Steam are good).
  • Get a decent ironing board and pad it properly.  Use thick upholstery felt or an old, good condition, doubled up blanket, cut to the shape of the board.  Then fold an old cotton sheet in four lengthways, cut it to six inches around the board, turn the board over and sew it using strong buttonhole thread and ladder stitch.
  • Make sure the board is the right height for you.
  • Get a sleeve extension and a plant spray.
  • Don’t press the steam button too much – you end up getting a jet of water on the clothes which can stain.
  • The best ones are mini-pressurised steam irons: the Italians make them with a separate steam box.
  • Always iron clothes slightly damp.

If you want to add even more freshness to your clothes then a great product to try is the Floral Ironing Water from Total Wardrobe Care. The Floral Ironing Water can be used to refresh linens when ironing. It leaves garments and bed linens fresh and it can also be put into steamers and irons for a fragrant steam. It can be used with the steamer to refresh any worn clothing and to kill moths and moth larvae. Ingredients: Natural lemongrass and orange blossom floral water in a handy spray bottle.
